On Valentine's Day we will be exchanging Valentine cards. This activity is optional, and it is not a party. If you choose to participate, please be sure to include enough valentines for each student in our homeroom class. There are 29 kids in the HOMEROOM class. I will send a list home this week with names. Additionally, if you want to bring in a decorated bag or box to collect them in that is fine! You can also just send in a plastic bag for all of them, whatever is easiest.
Grammar: We will continue our unit on verbs and verb tense. We will continue to review action verbs (direct objects and singular/plural spellings), linking verbs, helping verbs, verb phrases, and subject-verb agreement, Participles/Principal Parts of verbs. This week we will continue working on the 3 perfect tenses (past-perfect, present-perfect, and future-perfect). These perfect tenses can be confusing, so please encourage your students to study a bit each night. There will be a unit test in a few weeks.
Spelling-List 7 was passed out last week. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. On this quiz, we will begin including 5 review words from past lists. Students will have 15 words from the current pattern, and 5 review words from a previous pattern. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website: https://www.spellingcity.com/pratta. The quiz will be next week.
Writing: We will begin reviewing all 3 previous genres of writing. We will be spending approximately two to three weeks on each genre, starting with narrative. This week we are reviewing the structure of narrative and the story elements within each part (beginning, middle and end).
Reading: We will continue our Folklore (dramas, fables, folktales, fairytales, myths, and legends). Students will be reviewing what makes a folktale a folktale, attributes of all folklore, as well as the structure of dramatic literature. We will also be reviewing all of the story elements, theme, setting, characterization, conflict resolution, and tone/mood. This week we will continue focusing on folktales, fables and myths. This week we will also be working on constructive responses related to our Folklore unit. Students need to use the TEACH strategy to write complete responses to answer questions related to the text. We will also be working with comparing/contrasting stories and their characters. The February book review will be passed out tomorrow. Students should keep this in their binder. Students will need to read TWO 150-page books on their level and this will be due on Thursday, February 28th with parent signature. If your student has questions on their book, please remind them to come chat with me!
