Spelling: We will pass out list 6 in January after the Winter Break. Ms. Pratt’s homeroom received a Spelling Bee study list on Monday. We will have the class spelling bee in the next few days. If your child is interested in participating, please encourage them to study.
Grammar: This week we started Synonyms, Antonyms and Homonyms unit. For this unit, your child will need to be able to identify and use synonyms, antonyms and homonyms (homographs and homophones) correctly within a sentence. Students will practice using context clues to decipher between the homophones and homographs. Students will have notes in their binders, their grammar notebooks, and on Google Classroom. The test is Wednesday, December 19th.
Writing: This week we will continue discussing how to write an informational essay in the Compare and Contrast format. We will practice using Venn Diagrams and organizers to help us plan before we begin the essay writing. Students will practice how to support their comparison thesis with strong details/reasons showing similarities and differences from texts. Students will read articles on different topics and compare/contrast those topics. Students will be comparing/contrasting the two inventors or their inventions to use in our compare/contrast essay. The Essay test will be on Thursday, December 13th.
Reading: We are continuing our nonfiction unit that includes various text features and text structures. Students will continue identifying the various types of text structures. We will practice reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. Students are analyzing a biography on a historical figure. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to continue studying all the different types of text structures. We will also compare/contrast these text structures. Students will practice analyzing two articles and writing a comparison based on their topic, text structure and purpose.
If you would like extra practice for your child at home, visit the Launchpad website launchpad.fultonschools.org. There are many useful links available. One is a link for i-Ready. Your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional practice at home.
Please monitor your child’s monthly Book Log. Students are required to read one, 150 page book in December. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, December 18th. It must have a parent’s signature to be considered complete. If there is not a signature, it will be considered incomplete and late.
Thank you,
Ms. Pratt
