Hello parents,
Important Dates:
Monday, Sept. 9 – 13 – Book Fair Buying (will go with PM-my PM is Wednesday, Sept. 11)
Monday, Sept. 9 -- 13 – Boost for Bahamas—Dolvin’s Dorian Relief donations accepted
Thursday, Sept. 12 – Homeroom Student Council Speeches
Spelling: Students will receive their List 2 this week. List 1 and List 2 should stay in their binder. For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com/pratta. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year). On the quiz, students will need to be able to spell the word correctly, as well as define the words. We work a lot with prefix/suffix and how those change the meaning of a base/root word.
Grammar: This week we are finishing our Review Unit on Parts of Speech. We are reviewing subject/predicate, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns. We will have a CW grade to assess these review skills. At the end of the week, we will start a unit on Commas & Quotes by reviewing all the previously learned rules of commas (dates, city/state, in greeting/closing of letters, compound sentences, and complex sentences). Then we will learn the 5th grade rules including using to set off a direct address, with an appositive, and after introductory word/phrase. We’ll have a unit summative test at the end of the unit.
Writing: This week we are finishing working on developing good narrative introductions. We are working on developing our characters using dialogue, description and action. We are practicing painting a picture of the setting in the reader’s mind. We will also begin working on plot techniques, and various strategies to develop the plot of our story.
Reading: This week we are continuing to review the basic story elements found in 5th grade stories, such as characterization, point of view, setting, conflict, resolution, and theme. We will start our first novel for Book Clubs towards the end of the week. Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders-new one for September was passed out today). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, October 1.
Chorus: Ms. Endicott will allow students one more week to sign up to join chorus. All of the information can be found on her website at: http://dolvinmusicendicott.blogspot.com/p/dolvin-chorus.html .
Other Clubs: If your student is interested in joining any other clubs at Dolvin, please visit the Dolvin website and click the activities tab for more information.
School Dress Code
Below is the Dress code as written in the Dolvin Handbook. With summer still very present, I just wanted to remind everyone of the policy. We will give the students reminders about “school clothes” and “play/home clothes” as well. Thank you for helping reinforce the school dress code with the students.
All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or orderly operation of the school. Extremes in dressing and grooming will not be permitted. Shorts and skirts must meet finger-tip rule and straps must be one inch in width. Bare midriffs, see through clothing, and apparel that designate gangs or similar are not appropriate wear. Flip flops should not be worn to school. On the first violation, the teacher will send a note home to remind the parent and student of the dress code. For the second violation, students will be asked to call home for appropriate clothing or borrow from the clinic.
Devices
Students are not permitted to bring any devices to school at this time. We have not signed technology permission forms yet. If your student needs a cell phone for after school safety reasons, please let me know. The phone must be off and in their locker at all times. Please direct all necessary communication through the teacher.
