Dear Parents-You will receive a weekly update from both your child’s language arts teacher (me) and their math/science/social studies teacher every week. You will receive it in your e-mail as well as connected to my website/Infinite Campus parent portal. Please make sure you read and review this each week as it contains important information. We’ll remind you of this on Curriculum Night which is next Wednesday, August 28, starting at 6:30 pm in your child’s homeroom. Can’t wait to see you there!
5th Grade Rules and requirements: PLEASE READ
- Please check and SIGN your child's agenda. This is where you will find behavior notes from the teacher, test dates, student homework, etc. I ask that you sign every night, so I can make sure behavior notes are being shown to parents.
- Test Dates- I will send out test dates and changes in my Weekly Blast; students will also record these in their agenda.
- Quizzes- In 5th grade, quizzes are unannounced (except spelling). Students are expected to study nightly, so they are always prepared.
School Dress Code
Below is the Dress code as written in the Dolvin Handbook. With summer still very present, I just wanted to remind everyone of the policy. We will give the students reminders about “school clothes” and “play/home clothes” as well. Thank you for helping reinforce the school dress code with the students.
All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or orderly operation of the school. Extremes in dressing and grooming will not be permitted. Shorts and skirts must meet finger-tip rule and straps must be one inch in width. Bare midriffs, see through clothing, and apparel that designate gangs or similar are not appropriate wear. Flip flops should not be worn to school. On the first violation, the teacher will send a note home to remind the parent and student of the dress code. For the second violation, students will be asked to call home for appropriate clothing or borrow from the clinic.
Devices
Students are not permitted to bring any devices to school at this time. We have not signed technology permission forms yet. If your student needs a cell phone for after school safety reasons, please let me know. The phone must be off and in their locker at all times. Please direct all necessary communication through the teacher and/or front office during the school day. Students should not be sending and/or receiving messages on a device during the school day.

Curriculum Notes:
Grammar: We started our first unit last week which will review all 4th grade standards and usage rules for the following: common/proper nouns, singular/plural noun rules, possessive noun rules, action verbs, linking verbs, subjects, predicates, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. There will be formatives for end of unit assessments. Each student has notes to review in their Grammar Notebook.
Spelling: Your child will receive their first spelling list this week. It should be kept in the rings of their binder in the language arts section. Their quiz will be in about two weeks. We will suggest different ways to study these words through homework over the next two weeks. If you feel your child needs extra practice, all of the words have been uploaded to spellingcity.com/pratta. Be sure to choose the right grade/spelling pattern.
Writing: We started Writer’s Workshop last week by reviewing the expectations of Writer’s Workshop. Later this week, we’ll start digging into the narrative genre. Next week we will learn and work on techniques to develop a good introduction including character development, setting development, and placement of the conflict.
Reading: This week we will start Reader’s Workshop by reviewing the expectations along with other 5th grade reading expectations. Next week, we will be learning about the story elements including the following: protagonist/antagonist, characterization, point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, and 3rd omniscient), inferring setting, and identifying types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs. society).
Don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Friday, August 30. It will only be accepted if signed by a parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished.
