Grammar: This week we will continue our unit on Prepositional Phrases. For this unit, your child will be learning how to identify and use prepositions within prepositional phrases (start with a preposition and end with an object). They will also need to be able to identify what questions prepositional phrases answer, as well as expand sentences by adding prepositional phrases. Students will have notes in their binders, their grammar notebooks, and on Google Classroom.
Spelling: List 5 was passed out before the break. The quiz will be this Thursday, November 29th. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. On this test, we will begin including 5 review words from past lists. Students will have 15 words from the current pattern, and 5 review words from a previous pattern. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/pratta
Writing: This week we will continue Informational writing. We will continue to discuss using the rubric to guide our writing, and the components of a good inform writing. We will practice how to support our thesis with strong details/reasons from the given articles. We will also practice how to cite the source in which we found our evidence to support a thesis, how to explain evidence, and how to develop a conclusion. They will keep this example as well as the rubric as a reference. Their final test on Informational writing is coming up. They will be on the Write Score platform. Students will have to read 2 articles and answer questions based on the text. They will then write an essay on a given prompt using the 2 sources as evidence.
Reading: We are continuing our nonfiction unit that includes various text features and text structures. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures. We will practice reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. Students are analyzing a biography on a historical figure. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures. We will also compare/contrast these text structures. Students will choose between Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Henry Ford and Alexander Graham Bell (depending on their reading level). While reading this novel, we will be learning the note taking technique called Cornell Notes. Students will create their Cornell Notes to assist in the understanding of the historical figure, as well as prepare for their Newspaper Project. Students will be comparing/contrasting the two inventors or their inventions along with writing a chronological article, and a cause/effect article. These will be written here at school. Newspapers are due December 6th. Newspaper Day will be on December 7th. Students will wear PJs and enjoy hot cocoa/doughnuts while reading the paper. We will be doing newspaper/media related activities throughout the day. We will be sending home a request for supplies later this week.

Please monitor your child’s monthly Book Log. Students are required to read two, 150 page books in November. If a student has a 300 page book, they must get it approved ahead of time to count for 1 book. The non-fiction biography can count as 1 of their 2 books for the month of November. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Friday, November 30th. It must have a parent’s signature to be considered complete. If there is not a signature, it will be considered incomplete and late.
Thank you,
Ms. Pratt
