Grammar: This week we will wrap up our unit on Prepositional Phrases. For this unit, your child will need to be able to identify and use prepositions within prepositional phrases (start with a preposition and end with an object). They will also need to be able to identify what questions prepositional phrases answer, as well as expand sentences by adding prepositional phrases. Students will have notes in their binders, their grammar notebooks, and on Google Classroom. The test is Wednesday, December 5th.
Writing: Last week we took our Write Score Essay test to wrap up Informational writing. This week we will be discussing how to write an informational essay in the Compare and Contrast format. We will learn the essay format to use for comparing and contrasting. Students will practice how to support their comparison thesis with strong details/reasons showing similarities and differences from texts. Students will read articles on different topics and compare/contrast those topics.
Reading: We are continuing our nonfiction unit that includes various text features and text structures. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures. We will practice reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. Students are analyzing a biography on a historical figure. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures. We will also compare/contrast these text structures. Students will choose between Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Henry Ford and Alexander Graham Bell (depending on their reading level). While reading this novel, we will be learning the note taking technique called Cornell Notes. Students will create their Cornell Notes to assist in the understanding of the historical figure, as well as prepare for their Newspaper Project. Students will be comparing/contrasting the two inventors or their inventions along with writing a chronological article, and a cause/effect article. These will be written here at school. Newspapers are due December 6th. Newspaper Day will be on December 7th. Students will wear PJs and enjoy hot cocoa/doughnuts while reading the paper. We will be doing newspaper/media related activities throughout the day.
If you would like extra practice for your child at home, visit the Launchpad website launchpad.fultonschools.org. There are many useful links available. One is a link for i-Ready. Your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional practice at home.
Please monitor your child’s monthly Book Log. Students are required to read one, 150 page book in December. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, December 18th. It must have a parent’s signature to be considered complete. If there is not a signature, it will be considered incomplete and late.
Thank you,
Ms. Pratt
