Spelling: Students will receive list 4 this week. The quiz will be in about 2 weeks. All lists should stay in their binder. For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com/pratta. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year). On the quiz, students will need to be able to spell the word correctly, as well as define the words. We work a lot with prefix/suffix and how those change the meaning of a base/root word.
Grammar: We will begin our unit on Conjunctions and Interjections. During this unit, students will learn 3 types of conjunctions (coordinating, correlative, and subordinating), review the types of sentences (simple, compound, and complex), and apply the different conjunction to the appropriate uses within those sentences. This week we will be covering coordinating conjunctions. Students will have notes in their binders as well as their grammar notebooks.
Writing: Last week we concluded our narrative writing unit. This week we are learning about a new type of writing called a response to literature (or literary essay…considered informational). We are learning how to apply a topic, like theme, to their novel, and write a short essay including evidence. The students will have a frame/outline of the structure in their Reader’s Notebook along with an example. We will then practice another response to literature in preparation for our novel test, which will be at the end of next week.
Reading: We will be having a skills assessment this Tuesday, covering the skills of summarizing and story elements/theme. This will be a separate assessment from their Novel Test. We will also continue working with our novels for Book Clubs this week. The students are reading one of the following books: Old Yeller, My Side of the Mountain, or The Lemonade War. We will use the story to work with story elements, such as characterization, point of view, setting, conflict, resolution, and theme. We will also work with figurative language, theme, constructed responses, and practicing how to write a response to literature (see writing above). For their test next week, they can study the vocab, reflection questions, and story map/notes in their yellow novel folders along with their response to literature structure. We will be finishing reading the novel this week, so please encourage your student to stay caught up on their reading. We will have another novel comprehension check this week. Students will be allowed to use their books on the check-in. The October Book Log will be passed out this week. There will be no classroom novel to use for the October Book log. Students will need to read two, 150-page books and write the reviews. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Thursday, October 31.
Other Clubs: If your student is interested in joining any other clubs at Dolvin, please visit the Dolvin website and click the activities tab for more information.
School Dress Code
Below is the Dress code as written in the Dolvin Handbook. With summer still very present, I just wanted to remind everyone of the policy. We will give the students reminders about “school clothes” and “play/home clothes” as well. Thank you for helping reinforce the school dress code with the students.
All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or orderly operation of the school. Extremes in dressing and grooming will not be permitted. Shorts and skirts must meet finger-tip rule and straps must be one inch in width. Bare midriffs, see through clothing, and apparel that designate gangs or similar are not appropriate wear. Flip flops should not be worn to school. On the first violation, the teacher will send a note home to remind the parent and student of the dress code. For the second violation, students will be asked to call home for appropriate clothing or borrow from the clinic.
Devices
Students are not permitted to bring any devices to school at this time. We have not signed technology permission forms. If your student needs a cell phone for after school safety reasons, please let me know. The phone must be off and in their locker at all times. Please direct all necessary communication through the teacher.
