Grammar: We are continuing our unit on Conjunctions and Interjections. During this unit, students will learn 3 types of conjunctions (coordinating, correlative, and subordinating), review the types of sentences (simple, compound, and complex), and apply the different conjunction to the appropriate uses within those sentences. This week we will continue reviewing all 3 types of conjunctions and the types of sentences they can be found in. We will also review interjections. The test will be next week, Friday, November 2nd. Students will have notes in their binders as well as their grammar notebooks.
Spelling: List 4 quiz will be next week, Tuesday, Oct. 30th(after IOWA testing). Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/pratta
Writing: This week we will continue Informational writing. We will discuss the rubric, and the components of a good inform writing as we will begin a practice informational writing together. We will practice how to write a thesis in an introduction, how to cite a source, how to state evidence to support a thesis, how to explain evidence, and how to develop a conclusion. They will keep this example as well as the rubric as a reference.
Reading: This week we are continuing our nonfiction unit that includes various text features and text structures. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures. We will practice reading passages and determining the text structure used by looking for key words. Students are analyzing a biography on a historical figure. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures. We will also compare/contrast these text structures. Students will choose between Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Henry Ford and Alexander Graham Bell (depending on their reading level). While reading this novel, we will be learning the note taking technique called Cornell Notes. Students will create their Cornell Notes to assist in the understanding of the historical figure, as well as prepare for their Newspaper Project. Students will be comparing/contrasting the two inventors or their inventions along with writing a chronological article, and a cause/effect article. These will be written here at school. Once completed, we will have Newspaper Day. More information will be coming home about this closer to the date

The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Wednesday, Oct. 31st. It must have a parent’s signature to be considered complete. If there is not a signature, it will be considered incomplete and late.
