Grammar: We are continuing our unit on Conjunctions and Interjections. During this unit, students will learn 3 types of conjunctions (coordinating, correlative, and subordinating), review the types of sentences (simple, compound, and complex), and apply the different conjunction to the appropriate uses within those sentences. This week we will be reviewing all 3 types of conjunctions and the types of sentences they can be found in. Students will have notes in their binders as well as their grammar notebooks.
Spelling: List 4 quiz will be in about 2 weeks. Their lists should stay in their binders through the school year. Remember to study both the spelling and the definitions. If you would like for your child to have extra practice with their spelling words, they may use Spelling City website. https://www.spellingcity.com/pratta
Writing: This week we will continue Informational writing. We will begin by talking about the purpose of informative writing. We will discuss the rubric, and the components of a good inform writing. We will begin a practice informational writing together which will highlight how to write a thesis in an introduction, how to cite a source, how to state evidence to support a thesis, how to explain evidence, and how to develop a conclusion.
Reading: This week we are starting a new nonfiction unit in reading that will include various text features and text structures. Students will take notes on the various types of text structures. In this unit, students will be analyzing a biography on a historical figure. We will use these books, along with graphic novels, newspapers, and nonfiction articles, to study all the different types of text structures. We will also compare/contrast these text structures. Students will choose between Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Henry Ford and Alexander Graham Bell (depending on their reading level). While reading this novel, we will be learning the note taking technique called Cornell Notes. Students will create their Cornell Notes to assist in the understanding of the historical figure, as well as prepare for their Newspaper Project (more info coming soon…)
If you would like extra practice for your child at home, visit the Launchpad website launchpad.fultonschools.org. There are many useful links available. One is a link for i-Ready. Your child may use this link for i-Ready for additional practice at home.
Please monitor your child’s monthly Book Log. Students are required to read two, 150 page books in October. If a student has a 300 page book, they must get it approved ahead of time to count for 1 book. The non-fiction biography can count as 1 of their 2 books for the month of October. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Wednesday, Oct. 31st. It must have a parent’s signature to be considered complete. If there is not a signature, it will be considered incomplete and late.
