Hello parents,
Important Dates:
Wednesday, Sept. 18 – Student Council Meeting
Thursday, Sept. 19 – Author Visit, Carmen Agra Deedy
Friday, Sept. 20 – Spelling Quiz list 2
Spelling: Students are working with List 2 this week. The quiz will be Friday, Sept. 20th. List 1 and List 2 should stay in their binder. For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com/pratta. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year). On the quiz, students will need to be able to spell the word correctly, as well as define the words. We work a lot with prefix/suffix and how those change the meaning of a base/root word.
Grammar: We will continue our unit on Commas & Quotes. Last week we reviewed commas in dates, city/state, in greeting/closing of letters, compound sentences, and complex sentences. This week we will learn using commas to set off a direct address, with an appositive, and after introductory word/phrase. We will have a formative soon on commas only. We will move onto quotations next week. We’ll have a unit summative test at the end of the unit.
Writing: This week we are working on developing our narrative plot by including various plot techniques. These various strategies are used to develop the plot and add action to our story. Students will use strategies such as sequence, problem/solution, tension/suspense, foreshadowing, flashback/flashforward.
Reading: We will start our first novel for Book Clubs this week. The students will be reading one of the following books: Old Yeller, My Side of the Mountain, or The Lemonade War. We will use the story to work with story elements, such as characterization, point of view, setting, conflict, resolution, and theme. Students will create HOTS questions for book club discussions with their peers. They will also practice writing and speaking about what they have read. We will work with constructed responses on the reading. This novel can count for one of the two books on the September monthly Book Log. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, October 1.
Chorus: Ms. Endicott will allow students one more week to sign up to join chorus. All of the information can be found on her website at: http://dolvinmusicendicott.blogspot.com/p/dolvin-chorus.html .
Other Clubs: If your student is interested in joining any other clubs at Dolvin, please visit the Dolvin website and click the activities tab for more information.
School Dress Code
Below is the Dress code as written in the Dolvin Handbook. With summer still very present, I just wanted to remind everyone of the policy. We will give the students reminders about “school clothes” and “play/home clothes” as well. Thank you for helping reinforce the school dress code with the students.
All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or orderly operation of the school. Extremes in dressing and grooming will not be permitted. Shorts and skirts must meet finger-tip rule and straps must be one inch in width. Bare midriffs, see through clothing, and apparel that designate gangs or similar are not appropriate wear. Flip flops should not be worn to school. On the first violation, the teacher will send a note home to remind the parent and student of the dress code. For the second violation, students will be asked to call home for appropriate clothing or borrow from the clinic.
Devices
Students are not permitted to bring any devices to school at this time. We have not signed technology permission forms yet. If your student needs a cell phone for after school safety reasons, please let me know. The phone must be off and in their locker at all times. Please direct all necessary communication through the teacher
